the role of architect at the desaster

What a comfortable interior design is this!

No one can believe that it is the inside of shipping container(20 feet).

(Just a image↓)

This room is just one piece of containers in the shelter which  was built after Hukushima earthquake for local evacuees.

There are three two-story shelters and three-story shelters in total.

Every shelters are composed with multiple shipping containers.
Each container has bath, toilet and kitchen.
After the serious earth quake, it was required to construct a lot of shelters there.
So using existing shipping container cut the time to build shelter from the scratch.
More over, placing containers in a checkerboard pattern and create a open living space in between. Then using this space, we can make a room without containers.

More over, from the aspect of interior design, normally most of the shelter don't have furniture but in this shelter,so evacuees tend to suffer to buy new one or mess in the room.  However, in this shelter's case, furniture is equipped (they are equipped by volunteers) .

My opinion

The meaning of the term "cool" change the meaning depending on the situation you are in.
But I can say that the interior desing of this shelter is "cool".
There are not eye-opening furniture, vivid color in this room but this conformable design must have save the mind of evacuees.
I've been frequently browsing through Milan Salone's report these days but Today I accidentally found one book inside my bookshelf. It was my favorite architecture "Ban Shigeru".
Then I saw this and it gave me a chance to rethink what is a role of interior design.
It can  amuse people by new design.
It can  hugs mentally damaged people gently...

This is TED talk of Ban Shigeru "earth quake doesn't kill people. Building do..."
